Building Your Target Account List

The account list is the foundation everything else in ABM sits on - get it wrong and no amount of good campaign execution fixes it. Here's how to actually build one, and why sales has to help build it, not just receive it.

Every problem an ABM program runs into later - sales pushback, wasted budget, campaigns that never land - traces back to the account list. Good campaign execution against the wrong list still fails. This lesson covers how to actually build the list, not just what criteria to use.

Start With Data, Not a Wishlist

The most common mistake building a first account list is starting from a wishlist of "dream" logos instead of data that actually predicts fit. A dream-logo list feels ambitious but usually has no real basis for why those specific companies would buy now, from you, at a price you can win. Build the list from criteria that actually correlate with your existing wins instead:

  • Firmographic fit - company size, industry, geography, revenue band, growth stage. Pull this from your existing closed-won deals first: what do your best customers actually look like, not what you assume a good customer looks like.
  • Technographic signals - what tools a company already uses. A company running a specific CRM, a specific tech stack, or a competitor's product can be a strong fit or a strong disqualifier, depending on what you sell.
  • Intent data - active research signals suggesting a company is currently evaluating solutions in your category, not just a static fit on paper. See Intent Data vs Firmographic Data for the difference between "fits the profile" and "is actively looking right now" - both matter, but they answer different questions, and conflating them is a common scoring mistake.
  • Deal history - patterns in your actual closed-won and closed-lost data. What did the accounts that converted quickly have in common? What did the accounts that dragged for a year and never closed have in common?

Score, Don't Just List

A flat list without scoring makes tiering (see the previous lesson) impossible to do consistently. Build a simple scoring model that combines the criteria above into a single ranking - it doesn't need to be sophisticated to start. A basic weighted score across firmographic fit, technographic fit, and any available intent signal is enough to rank a first list meaningfully. Refine the weights over time as you learn which criteria actually predicted your real wins.

Sales Builds the List With You, Not After You

This is the step most first-time ABM programs get wrong, and it's the single biggest predictor of whether the program survives contact with sales. A list marketing builds alone and hands to sales gets treated as a marketing list, not a shared target - exactly the "these leads don't fit" problem ABM exists to solve. Sales needs to review, add, remove, and sign off on the list before a single campaign launches, not after seeing the first results.

In practice this means a working session, not an email approval. Walk sales through the scoring criteria, let them flag accounts the data missed (a rep's own pipeline knowledge often catches real signals no dataset captures), and get explicit agreement on the final list. This is also where the list naturally splits into tiers - sales usually already has a clear sense of which accounts deserve one-to-one attention versus which belong in a broader program.

Keep the List Alive

A target account list built once and never revisited goes stale within a quarter - companies get acquired, budgets change, buying committees turn over, and new intent signals emerge that should move an account up or down in priority. Build a review cadence into the program from day one (quarterly is a reasonable default for most B2B sales cycles), not as an afterthought once the list already feels outdated.

The next lesson covers what happens after the list exists: getting sales and marketing genuinely coordinated around it, not just agreed on paper.
