The ABM Playbook

Aligning Sales and Marketing for ABM

A shared account list isn't alignment by itself - it's the starting point. Real alignment is a working cadence, a clear handoff process, and outbound that actually knows what marketing has already done inside an account.

A jointly-built, jointly-approved account list (covered in the previous lesson) is necessary for ABM to work, but it isn't sufficient. Plenty of ABM programs have a shared list and still run marketing and sales as two disconnected motions pointed at the same companies - which produces a specific, common failure: an account gets a personalized ad campaign and a cold outbound email in the same week, from two teams who never talked to each other about it, and the prospect experiences it as two unrelated companies reaching out, not one coordinated effort.

Outbound Without ABM Coordination Loses Its Context

The relationship between outbound sales and ABM is worth being precise about, because they get conflated constantly. As covered in Outbound Sales vs Account-Based Marketing, outbound is a rep-led motion that can run entirely on its own - a seller working a list on their own initiative. ABM specifically requires marketing and sales to coordinate their touches into the same accounts. Run outbound without that coordination and every cold email lands with zero context, regardless of how good the account list is.

We've written more on the specific coordination gap that causes this in Why Outbound Sales and ABM Keep Working Against Each Other - the short version is that most well-run enterprise motions treat outbound as the execution layer inside a broader ABM strategy, not a substitute for one, and treating it as a substitute is exactly what produces the disconnected-outreach problem.

What Actual Coordination Looks Like

Three things separate a genuinely coordinated motion from a shared spreadsheet:

1. A Shared View of What's Already Happened in an Account

A rep about to reach out to a target account should be able to see, at a glance, what marketing has already done there - which ads that account's employees have seen, what content they've engaged with, whether anyone from the buying committee has visited the pricing page. Without this, sales either duplicates marketing's messaging (redundant) or contradicts it (worse). This doesn't require an expensive platform to start - even a shared tracker updated weekly beats total blindness between teams.

2. Marketing Precedes and Supports Outreach, Not the Reverse

The sequencing matters. Awareness and relevance-building through ads and content should generally land in an account before a cold outbound touch, so the prospect has some context for why a rep is reaching out. A cold email into an account that's seen zero prior marketing reads as generic; the same email into an account that's already seen relevant content reads as informed follow-up.

3. A Real Handoff Process, Not a Lead Dump

When an account shows real engagement (multiple contacts, multiple touches, meaningful time on high-intent content), there needs to be an explicit, agreed process for how that gets flagged to sales - not a dashboard nobody checks. Define what "ready for direct outreach" actually means for your specific sales cycle, and build the handoff around that definition rather than leaving it implicit.

The Cadence That Keeps This Working

Alignment built once at program launch decays without a recurring cadence to maintain it. A regular joint review - even a short one, biweekly or monthly depending on sales cycle length - where marketing and sales look at account-level engagement together, discuss which accounts are heating up, and adjust tier assignments or campaign focus, is what keeps the two teams actually working the same list instead of drifting back into parallel, disconnected motions.

With alignment in place, the next lesson covers the actual channels and tactics that do the work inside a target account.
