SMS Marketing vs WhatsApp Marketing: What's the Difference?

SMS reaches every mobile number, needs no app or data connection, and is built for one-way sends. WhatsApp only reaches people who have the app, but supports richer content and real two-way conversation. Reach versus engagement is the actual tradeoff.

SMS marketing sends text messages over the cellular network to any mobile number, working on any phone without requiring an app or an internet connection, and is largely a one-way channel where messages typically don't expect a reply.

WhatsApp marketing sends messages through the WhatsApp app, which only reaches recipients who have it installed and an active internet connection, but supports far richer content - up to roughly 4,096 characters, plus images, video, and interactive buttons - and enables genuine two-way, real-time conversation rather than a one-way broadcast.

The core tradeoff is reach against engagement. SMS reaches essentially every mobile phone, including feature phones with no data connection, which makes it the more universal channel for a broad or less digitally-connected audience. WhatsApp only reaches people who both have the app and are online, but where it does reach someone, it tends to perform better: interactive WhatsApp messages report click-through rates in the 45-60% range against typically 2-6% for SMS, since WhatsApp lets a customer act with a button tap in the chat rather than manually opening a link. WhatsApp marketing also runs on a different structure - a business can message freely within a 24-hour window after a customer-initiated contact, but outside that window must use a pre-approved, paid template message - which SMS marketing has no equivalent restriction for. Both channels require the recipient's opt-in, but the choice between them typically comes down to which one the target audience is actually reachable and most responsive on.
