A2P Messaging vs P2P Messaging: What's the Difference?

P2P messaging is one person texting another directly, with nothing automated involved. A2P messaging is an application or system sending texts to people at scale - which is what every business SMS platform actually runs on, and why it's held to a stricter set of rules.

P2P (Person-to-Person) messaging is a text sent directly from one individual's phone to another's, with no application or automated system involved in the middle - ordinary personal texting.

A2P (Application-to-Person) messaging is a text sent from an application or automated system to an individual - one-time passcodes, appointment reminders, order updates, and marketing messages, sent by software rather than typed by a person on their own phone.

Every business SMS or WhatsApp platform runs on A2P messaging, not P2P, which matters because the two are treated differently by carriers and regulators. A2P messaging is explicitly built for volume - it can be one-way, where no reply is expected, or two-way for transactional and conversational use - and because it comes from a business rather than an individual, it's held to compliance requirements P2P traffic doesn't carry, including consent and opt-out rules under frameworks like TCPA and GDPR. Carriers also monitor and rate-limit A2P traffic separately from P2P traffic specifically to keep automated business messaging from degrading the network the way unrestricted bulk sending could, which is part of why business SMS platforms require registration and vetting that an individual sending personal texts never has to go through.
