The Conversion Optimization Playbook
Everything we know about conversion rate optimization, structured as a real learning path - start with what CRO actually is, finish with running a continuous testing program instead of one-off redesigns.
The Lessons
What Is Conversion Rate Optimization? Beginner
More traffic is the expensive way to grow revenue when the actual constraint is conversion, not volume. CRO is diagnosing where and why visitors actually fail t…
Diagnosing Where Visitors Actually Drop Off Beginner
Before a single test launches, diagnosis has to answer two separate questions: where are people actually leaving, and why. Heatmaps, session recordings, and fun…
Writing a Real, Testable Hypothesis Beginner
"Let's try a different headline" is not a hypothesis - it's a guess with a test attached. A real hypothesis names the problem, the proposed fix, the expected ou…
Landing Page Optimization Fundamentals Intermediate
A landing page that tries to do five things does none of them well. The pages that actually convert are built around a single goal, matched to a single traffic …
Funnel Optimization: Finding the Leak Intermediate
A multi-step checkout or signup flow can have a healthy top-of-funnel rate and a weak finish, and a blended conversion number will never show you that - it take…
Statistical Significance and Sample Size Intermediate/Advanced
A number that looks good on day two of a test is not a result - it's noise that hasn't had time to average out yet. Sample size and run time, calculated before …
Measuring CRO: From Form Fill to Closed-Won Intermediate
Lead volume climbing while sales says close rate is falling is not a win, even though the conversion rate report says otherwise. Measuring CRO honestly means tr…
Scaling CRO: Running a Continuous Testing Program Advanced
A single redesign fixes the most obvious problems and then the conversion rate drifts again as traffic sources, offers, and competitors change. CRO only keeps p…
Common questions
They're built to be read in order - each one assumes what the previous lessons covered, and the later lessons on statistical significance and scaling won't make much sense without the earlier groundwork on diagnosis and hypothesis testing. That said, if you already know the basics, jump straight to whichever lesson covers your actual gap.
This playbook is the thinking behind how we run CRO for clients, made public and free. Our Conversion Optimization service is us doing this work for you, on your actual site and funnel, with your actual traffic and diagnostic data - the playbook won't run your tests, but it'll tell you honestly what's involved before you decide whether to run it yourself or bring us in.
The diagnostic phase alone usually takes one to two weeks, and each individual test needs two to four weeks to reach real statistical significance. A programme with a genuine testing cadence tends to show its first validated win within six to eight weeks, not the first few days - the advanced material in the later lessons, a continuous testing programme running across a full site, is a multi-quarter build, not a sprint.
Want a testing program built for your actual traffic, not a generic redesign?
We'll build and run this - or audit what you've already got and tell you honestly what's missing.
Ready to get started?
We usually reply within 24 hours.
