Workflow Automation vs Marketing Automation: What's the Difference?

Every marketing automation is a workflow automation, but not every workflow automation touches a lead at all. The broader category also covers internal processes that have nothing to do with a prospect's journey.

Marketing automation specifically automates marketing-facing processes tied to leads and prospects - nurture sequences, lead scoring, campaign sends - aimed at moving a contact through a marketing funnel.

Workflow automation is the broader category - automating any repeatable business process with triggers and actions, whether or not it touches a lead at all: syncing data between two internal tools, routing an internal approval request, updating a spreadsheet when a form is submitted, or notifying a team in Slack when a deal closes.

Every marketing automation is a workflow automation, but not every workflow automation is marketing automation - the broader category also covers internal operations that have nothing to do with a prospect's journey. In practice, many marketing automation platforms run a mix of both: nurture sequences sitting alongside internal workflows, such as passing a lead's data into a CRM or notifying a rep in Slack, that aren't marketing-facing to the recipient at all but rely on the same automation engine to run.
