WhatsApp Catalog vs WhatsApp Business Profile: What's the Difference?

A business profile is your public identity - name, logo, hours, a short description, the information that lets a customer confirm who they're talking to. A catalog is a product showcase sitting inside that profile, listing items with images, prices, and descriptions a customer can browse without leaving the chat. One establishes trust; the other sells.

A WhatsApp Business Profile displays a business's core identifying information - name, logo, address, category, email, website, business hours, and a short description - giving a customer a way to verify who they're actually talking to.

A WhatsApp Catalog is a product or service showcase, listing individual items with images, prices, and descriptions, that lets a customer browse and often purchase directly from within the chat rather than navigating away to a separate website.

The relationship between the two is nested rather than competing: a catalog functions as a feature that lives inside a business profile, not a separate, standalone presence a customer finds independently. The profile is what establishes legitimacy and basic context before a conversation even starts - a customer glancing at business hours or a verified category to decide whether they're dealing with who they think they are. The catalog is what turns an ongoing conversation into a purchase opportunity, letting a customer tap through products without leaving WhatsApp at all, which removes a meaningful amount of friction compared to directing someone to an external site mid-conversation. Catalogs are only available to WhatsApp Business accounts, not personal WhatsApp, and reported catalog size limits differ between a standard Business account and one running on the Business API, so a business planning to list a large product range should confirm current limits for its specific account type before building the catalog out.
