WhatsApp Broadcast List vs WhatsApp Status: What's the Difference?

A broadcast list sends a message directly to each recipient as an individual chat - private, one-to-one, with replies coming back only to the sender. Status is a public, Stories-style post that anyone with your number saved can view, expiring after 24 hours without being delivered as a message at all. One pushes content into a chat; the other sits passively for contacts to check.

A WhatsApp broadcast list sends a message to a list of contacts as individual, one-on-one chats - each recipient receives it directly in their own chat with the sender, replies go back only to the sender, and recipients have no visibility into who else received the same message.

WhatsApp Status is a Stories-style post, visible for 24 hours, that any contact who has the sender's number saved can view by actively checking the Status tab - it isn't pushed into anyone's chat list the way a broadcast message is.

The difference is push versus passive visibility. A broadcast list actively delivers content directly into a recipient's chat, appearing the same way any direct message would, which makes it a more deliberate, attention-grabbing mechanism - but it only reaches contacts who have the sender's number saved, and native broadcast lists are commonly capped at a limited number of recipients. A Status update doesn't push anything into anyone's inbox; it sits available for 24 hours, and reach depends entirely on how many contacts happen to check their Status feed during that window, which tends to produce more passive, lower-pressure visibility than a broadcast message landing directly in a chat. Status also disappears automatically after 24 hours with no action required, while a broadcast message remains in the recipient's chat history indefinitely unless they delete it. A business balancing both tends to use broadcast lists for time-sensitive, higher-priority updates meant to be seen directly, and Status for more casual, ongoing visibility - behind-the-scenes content, limited-time offers - that doesn't warrant pushing a direct message to every contact.
