Welcome Series vs Nurture Sequence: What's the Difference?

A welcome series is short and finite - a few emails introducing the brand right after someone signs up. A nurture sequence is longer and ongoing, built to keep delivering value and building trust well past that first introduction. The terms get used interchangeably often enough to cause real confusion.

A welcome series is a short, finite sequence of emails - often around three - sent to a new subscriber immediately after they sign up, introducing the brand and setting expectations for what emails going forward will look like.

A nurture sequence is a longer, ongoing pattern of emails - typically five to seven or more, and sometimes without a fixed endpoint - built to build trust and authority over time by consistently delivering value rather than just making a first introduction.

The two are used interchangeably often enough in casual conversation that the distinction gets lost, but they serve different points in the relationship. A welcome series has one specific job and a natural endpoint: greet a new subscriber, explain what to expect, and hand them off - once it's done, it's done. A nurture sequence has no such natural endpoint in the same way, since its entire purpose is sustained relationship-building through continued value rather than a one-time introduction, which is why it tends to run longer and can continue well past where a welcome series would have already finished. In practice, a subscriber typically moves through a welcome series first and into a nurture sequence afterward - the welcome series makes the introduction, and the nurture sequence is what actually builds the relationship out over time.
