Verified vs Unverified WhatsApp Business Account: What's the Difference?

An unverified account shows customers a phone number in their chat list. A verified Official Business Account shows the actual business name instead, and unlocks a higher messaging tier plus access to WhatsApp ads and in-chat selling that an unverified account can't use at all.

An unverified WhatsApp Business Account shows up in a customer's chat list as a phone number rather than a business name, and is capped at Meta's lowest messaging tier, which limits how many unique customers it can contact daily.

A verified WhatsApp Business Account, marked with an official verification badge once Meta confirms the business is real, displays the business's actual name in a customer's chat rather than a number, and unlocks a progressively higher messaging tier as trust builds - scaling from a few hundred unique daily contacts up into the hundreds of thousands.

Verification is a real functional gate on top of just showing a name, not simply a trust signal. Without it, a business stalls at the lowest messaging tier regardless of how well its account otherwise performs, and several features are locked out entirely - many WhatsApp lead-generation ad placements require a verified account to run at all, and selling directly inside a WhatsApp chat similarly requires verification first. This is worth noting on badge color specifically: Meta unified its verification badge to blue across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook in 2024, so a currently verified account carries a blue badge rather than the green one some older material still references - the color changed, but what it certifies, and the messaging-tier and commerce access it unlocks, did not.
