Trigger-Based vs Scheduled Campaigns: What's the Difference?

A scheduled campaign sends to everyone at the same moment, regardless of what they've done. A trigger-based campaign fires individually the instant a specific action happens. Most functioning programs need both running at once.

Scheduled campaigns send to a defined list at a specific, pre-set time - a weekly newsletter, a monthly promotion - regardless of what any individual recipient has done recently. Everyone on the list gets it at the same moment.

Trigger-based campaigns send automatically in response to a specific action a person takes - abandoning a cart, downloading a resource, crossing a score threshold - firing individually whenever that condition is met, whatever time that happens to be for that person.

Scheduled campaigns are predictable and easy to plan around - a content calendar, a product launch date - but they're blind to individual timing and relevance, sending the same message to someone who just converted and someone who's never engaged at all. Trigger-based campaigns are far more relevant to each recipient's actual moment, but they need the underlying behavioural tracking and automation logic built and maintained correctly, and volume is harder to plan around since it depends on how many people trigger the condition on a given day. Most functioning programs run both: scheduled campaigns for planned announcements, trigger-based automation running continuously underneath for behaviour-driven moments.
