Share of Voice vs Brand Sentiment: What's the Difference?

Share of voice measures how much of the conversation your brand owns relative to competitors. Brand sentiment measures whether that conversation is actually positive. A brand can lead decisively on share of voice while sentiment quietly turns negative underneath it - which is exactly why the two need to be read together, not separately.

Share of voice measures how much a brand is being discussed relative to its competitors, typically calculated as that brand's mentions divided by the combined mentions of itself and its main competitors, expressed as a percentage - on its own, it's mainly an indicator of awareness.

Brand sentiment measures whether the conversation about a brand is actually positive, negative, or neutral, typically through automated classification of the tone in unprompted, in-the-wild mentions across social and other public channels.

The two answer genuinely different questions, which is why tracking only one gives an incomplete picture. Share of voice tells you how much people are talking about a brand, but says nothing about whether that attention is good news - a coordinated campaign, a viral moment, or a product controversy can all drive a real spike in share of voice, and the metric alone can't distinguish a win from a crisis. Brand sentiment fills that specific gap, reading the tone of the conversation directly rather than just its volume, which also makes it useful as an early warning system - since it reads live conversation rather than a periodic survey, a negative sentiment shift can surface before it shows up in sales numbers or a quarterly brand study. The two diverging is the signal worth watching for: rising mention volume paired with falling sentiment at the same time means a brand is being talked about more and liked less, a pattern a share-of-voice chart alone would show as pure growth. Reading the two together, rather than treating a rising share-of-voice number as an unqualified win on its own, is what catches that kind of problem while it's still forming instead of after it's already done damage.
