Lead Nurturing vs Drip Campaigns: What's the Difference?

A drip campaign sends the same fixed sequence to everyone on a schedule. Lead nurturing adapts to what each lead actually does. One is a tactic; the other is the strategy it should sit inside.

Lead nurturing is the overall strategy of building a relationship with a lead over time until they're ready to buy - adapting content, messaging, and timing based on the lead's behaviour, funnel stage, and how they respond, across whatever channels make sense: email, retargeting ads, or direct sales outreach.

Drip campaigns are one specific tactic within nurturing - a pre-set, fixed sequence of emails sent automatically on a schedule (day 1, day 3, day 7, and so on) regardless of how the recipient behaves in between. Everyone who enters a drip gets the same messages in the same order at the same intervals.

Drip campaigns are reliable and easy to set up, but rigid: a genuinely interested lead ready to buy on day two still waits through the full sequence built for someone barely engaged. Real lead nurturing uses drip sequences as a building block but layers behavioural triggers on top - branching a lead into a different track, accelerating the sequence, or looping in sales the moment a high-intent action happens - so the outreach adapts to the person instead of running on a fixed clock no matter what they actually do.
