Instagram Reels vs Instagram Stories: What's the Difference?

Reels are built to reach people who've never seen the brand before and stay discoverable indefinitely. Stories are built to keep existing followers engaged and disappear after 24 hours. Using Reels to nurture and Stories to grow gets the two backwards.

Instagram Reels are short videos - now up to a few minutes long - that stay permanently on a profile and are surfaced to non-followers through the Explore page and Instagram's recommendation system, built primarily to put content in front of people who don't already follow the account.

Instagram Stories are photos or short videos that disappear after 24 hours unless separately saved, shown mainly to an account's existing followers, and built for quick, time-sensitive updates and daily interaction rather than long-term discovery.

That difference in built-in distribution shows up directly in what each format is good at. Reels reach meaningfully more new people relative to follower count than Stories do, since Instagram actively pushes Reels to non-followers based on interest, and because Reels persist on the profile, they keep generating that discovery-driven reach well after the day they were posted. Stories can't match that reach, but they consistently generate stronger engagement per view from the people who do see them, since that audience is almost entirely existing, invested followers - Stories are what drives direct messages, poll responses, and quick link clicks in a way Reels generally don't. The practical implication is to match the format to the job: Reels for reaching new audiences and building discoverable, evergreen content, Stories for daily touchpoints and interactive features with an audience that's already following along.
