Boosted Post vs Paid Ad: What's the Difference?

A boosted post takes something already published and pays to widen its reach. A paid ad is built from scratch in Ads Manager with a specific objective, detailed targeting, and formats a normal post can't use. Boosting is faster; a built ad is more precise.

A boosted post takes content already published to a Facebook or Instagram page and pays to extend its reach beyond organic distribution, set up in a few clicks directly from the post itself, with a simplified choice of goal - typically more engagement, website visits, or messages - and basic targeting by age, location, and interests.

A paid ad is built directly in Meta Ads Manager rather than boosted from an existing post, with access to the platform's full range of campaign objectives (including conversions, lead generation, and app installs), advanced targeting such as custom and lookalike audiences, and ad formats - including "dark posts" that never appear on the page's own timeline - that a boosted post can't use.

The practical difference comes down to speed versus control. Boosting is built for a marketer who wants more eyes on a specific post quickly, with minimal setup and no need to learn Ads Manager. Building a paid ad takes more setup but is what campaigns actually optimizing toward a business outcome - purchases, leads, sign-ups - need, since Meta's delivery algorithm is optimizing toward that outcome directly rather than simply toward reach or engagement. Agencies running any campaign with a real conversion goal build it as a proper ad rather than a boost, reserving boosting for cases where visibility on a specific organic post is the entire goal.
