Behavioral vs Demographic Segmentation: What's the Difference?

Demographic segmentation answers who someone is. Behavioral segmentation answers what they're doing right now. A campaign built on demographics alone can message a cold prospect and an engaged one identically, just because both share a job title.

Demographic segmentation groups contacts by static, structural attributes - job title, company size, industry, location - information usually captured once, at signup or through enrichment, and rarely changing day to day.

Behavioral segmentation groups contacts by what they actually do - pages visited, emails opened, features used, content downloaded - attributes that shift constantly as someone's activity and interest change.

Demographic segmentation answers who this person is; behavioral segmentation answers what they're doing right now. A campaign built purely on demographics can send the same message to a highly engaged prospect and one who's gone completely cold, simply because both fit the same job title. Layering behavioural segments on top - engaged in the last 30 days, versus no activity in 90 - lets automation actually respond to where someone is in their journey, not just who they are on paper.
